AT WORK WITH THE DECK
You'd be forgiven for not noticing The Deck. Nestled away on a quiet street in Cardiff Bay they are the true champions of independent business.
From cakes to crafts The Deck is there to showcase the best of local, which is almost completely ignored and obscured by all the chains that feature heavily in Cardiff Bay. The Deck is a diamond in the rough, and a sparkling diamond at that.
Not only is The Deck a coffee shop, but it's also used for just about anything and everything. From formal functions, baking classes and wedding receptions, it is fast becoming an event destination. They also host supper clubs from chef Emma Evans.
I chatted to co-founder Debra about The Deck and discussed what makes it so unique.
"We had been designing and baking cakes from home with our original company Love Peace and Cupcake. Our customer base was increasing rapidly and the kitchen in our house was becoming quite a challenge, juggling family life and baking
One of those chance conversations saw us being given the opportunity to own The Deck. This enabled us to grow the existing company and couple cakes with coffee.
The Deck has been a coffee place for several years now and some may have thought it best to change its name, seeing as we are the third owners. We decided that the name suited the building incredibly well and in its title, it somehow has its own character. People refer to it as The Deck, not just that cafe around the corner!"
Championing all things local:
"From the initial concept, The Deck was always going to be a national platform. We have a passion for supporting local businesses, especially those providing unique handcrafted goods. Over the years we have met many inspirational artisans in both the food and craft market and wanted to showcase the talent out there.
The Deck is a place that people can come and guarantee an affordable high-quality Welsh product."
The Deck one year from now:
"2014 is going to be an exciting year. We have lots of ideas in the pipeline. The Secret Supper Clwb just confirmed The Deck as their regular residential location, so we will have a monthly celebrity chef in the kitchen.
Our hours will be changing soon, expanding into the evenings, and we will be serving locally produced specialty beers and wines.
We will also have an eclectic selection of pop-up events happening throughout the year.
In one years' time, we would like to think that The Deck will be the Bays' very own Central Perk with a twist."
"Watch this space. We like to surprise!"
